Okay folks, I'm essentially looking at installing Linux Mint on my Mum's Dell Inspiron Mini 10, currently running Windows XP. I informed her that I was going to install Linux Mint on it, to provide a more up to date OS on it, and also get rid of the 'slowdown' she mentioned on the device.
I spoke to her about her needs (basic web browsing, YouTube and some light to medium office work), as well as perhaps a couple of other non-specific general computing things that sounded like Linux Mint would be fine for, especially as she was coming over from Windows XP.All seemed to be fine, but then she mentions that she has a lot of stuff on an iTunes account, and she likes using her iPad (1st gen) and iPod Shuffle. I did some light research and it seems that it's possible for the iPad and iPod to be synced via another program or library, which I can install (though I admit to needing more research to see what exactly is involved), but my concern is I'm not sure about how I'd be able to allow her to download her iTunes purchases to Linux Mint. Syncing Apple anything through a third party application is a horrible idea that even if you get it to work, will eventually cease to work because Apple is very controlling of their products. If she has only music through iTunes and wants to place it on a new device you should be able to convert it to the AAC format in iTunes, the method for doing this has changed a few times. After conversion you will have to sort by format/file type and you can then easily copy them to a back up folder to be saved.If you need to keep iTunes then I would just do a fresh install of XP SP3 or if you want to chance it, Windows 7 or 8.
Do not install 10, it is very demanding on the HDD and will slow it down substantially. 8 has improvements over 7 but you may want to download a start button so she can use. There is a free start button out there that is pretty good and then I believe Stardock makes a $5 that worked flawlessly.The ideal solution mind you, is to get a new machine made for Win10 but I understand that isn't always an option.
